===Background===
In 1996,<ref group="Notes">As seen in [[Interlude 12.none]], Addison is 14 years old as of Leviathan's attack on May 15, 2011. As Shawn triggered near the end of a summer when he had to perform a C-section on Kelly, Addison must have been born in 1996.</ref><ref name=":0" /> Shawn lived with his pregnant girlfriend, Kelly, in a mobile home. She dealt with mental health issues, specifically schizophrenia, but regardless they still had a happy relationship together. One day at the end of summer, their home was caught in a mudslide and they were both trapped. Shawn [[trigger]]ed when he had to perform a C-section on his girlfriend, to save the life of his son, Addison.<ref name=12.none/>

At some point, Shawn joined the Brockton Bay Protectorate as Dauntless. Dauntless initially assumed that his power was to temporarily empower disposable tools, like the white-hot cauterizing knife he charged during his trigger event, a temporary charge that faded after a while. He actually tried to avoid being forced to empower his costume, concerned that the traces of residual charge left behind might eventually ruin it and require replacing. It took many years for him to discover that large amounts of this "residual" charge could permanently enhance an item, with enough successive charges actually surpassing the temporary boost they got when first charged. This revelation transformed his career and led him to become a significant "rising star" in 2011.<ref name=":0" />

Dauntless was present when [[Shadow Stalker]]'s case was looked over by a special committee. After the committee granted Shadow Stalker a probationary status amongst the [[Wards]], he approached [[List of Minor Characters#Alan Barnes|Alan Barnes]] and asked for legal aid.<ref name="I19.z">Dauntless approached her dad. Not as primary characters, for Dauntless or Oliver, but enough fragments of stories that they've talked in or shared parts of themselves in that I know who they are. Dauntless is admittedly confused a bit with Triumph in some drafts, just as far as background, etc- this leads to slight incongruencies and patches in my memory- I can't remember if Dauntless or Triumph are the ones who approach Alan Barnes to ask about divorce. In early drafts I tried writing a purely mundane character, Dauntless'/Triumph's daughter, who has to deal with the fact that their parent is a superhero.
