When it came out that Cauldron was behind many parahumans within the Protectorate. With Satyr being zeroed in on as a client of Cauldron, Pretender killed a [[Watchdog]] Thinker who had discovered Satyr's past.<ref name="I24.y e2">Satyr seemed to take that into consideration, rubbing his chin. When he spoke, though, he spoke of something else. “What you did… you knew that they’d figured you out, and that I was next in line, that I’d get questioned too. What would you do differently?<br/><br/>The info about what Alexandria is was inevitably going to leak, even before she died, and the death could readily be a catalyst for many people talking about it. Only Contessa was really holding them back (and Cauldron, behind the scenes, decided to stop protecting the Triumvirate: see number man’s interlude). So it was bound to get out somehow.<br/><br/>Alexandria dies, and you have to tell the public -something-. Chevalier makes the call to tell the public about her shady background, with the caveat that he has to reassure the public that the Alexandria situation won’t recur. He promises to vet the leadership, makes it public so the ones in power know to step down while there’s still an excuse.<br/><br/>But you get isolated cases like Pretender, who are too committed to their careers to leave, people who know they have immediate subordinates who are Cauldron Capes. Who find themselves between a rock and a hard place, in a situation where things were already strained at best (ie. Heroes in more flamboyant and colorful costumes than normal, their moods a contrast in how dark they were. Arrived to fight off mercenaries that Pretender had hired to free himself.<ref name="23.2 e3">“What a mess,” Satyr called out.<br/><br/>Heads turned.<br/><br/>The Vegas Wards had arrived, perched on top of the nearest wall.  They didn’t move to help, didn’t leap to intervene.  Satyr glanced at Bambina, who was struggling to free herself from the bola.  There was something in his eyes.<br/><br/>Were they in on it?<br/><br/>“Help us!” Vantage called out.  “Rime’s out, and we can’t save Weaver!”<br/><br/>Satyr didn’t speak.  He glanced at the ship.  He couldn’t see from the angle he’d approached, but the woman inside had pulled the lever, and the door at the back was slowly closing.<br/><br/>I drew out words on the side.<br/><br/>Pretender in danger<br/><br/>The heroes turned, eyes going wide. But the Protectorate was going to take Pretender from us because of how he got his powers.  It’s ridiculous.”<br/><br/>“He was still going to be on the team,” Arbiter said.  “Just… we can’t let him be leader if he’s beholden to a group like that.”<br/><br/>“It shouldn’t matter.”<br/><br/>“Cauldron’s evil,” Arbiter said.  “They experimented on people to get the powers Pretender has.”<br/><br/>“It doesn’t matter,” Satyr said. Attended the fight at [[New Delhi]], arriving in a way separate from the rest of the Protectorate.<ref name="I24">Vegas was absent too.  They’d turned traitor, walked away.  Satyrical had turned down the offer for a ride to the battle, claiming they’d make their own way.  It was disconcerting, to think they had access to transportation in that vein.  Teleporters?  A craft that could and ''would'' carry people halfway around the world fast enough?
