Appearance & Personality

Doormaker was described as a plain-looking young man;<ref name="30.5">Speck 30.5</ref> pale, somewhere in his thirties.<ref name="appearance 29.7">At the very back of the room, separate from the group, were two pale young men, laid out on desks that sat on either side of a reinforced door. Doormaker, I could assume, based on what I'd heard upstairs, along with the clairvoyant the Doctor had mentioned in the past. - Venom 29.7</ref> He was almost always accompanied by the Clairvoyant, whose power he made constant use of.

Abilities and Powers

Doormaker can open and close portals<ref name="29.I e1">And the last… a boy, staring off into the distance.

She asked her power, and she got her answer.

He could make doors.

He could also close the other doors, the gaps left around the other entity. It would minimize the chance that the golden man could find them. - Interlude 29</ref> between places he has sensory awareness of, including between dimensions. He sees into other worlds to an extent but unfortunately perceives too many worlds at once, which negatively impacted his life.<ref name="29.I e2">“I can’t… too much to look at,” he said. “So many worlds at once.”

“I know. We’re going to do what we can, okay?”

“I’m… I’m pretty scared.” There was a tremor in his voice. - Interlude 29</ref><ref name="15.z e1" /> By 1988, Doormaker was functionally blind and deaf.<ref name="15.z e1">“He gained a very valuable set of powers, but there was an unfortunate effect on his perceptions. He sees too much at once. He’s effectively blind and deaf. He agreed to work for me in exchange for care and comfort.” - Interlude 15.z</ref> Legend speculated this was because of too much exposure to Clairvoyant, who had great synergy with Doormaker.<ref name="29.3 e1">“Closed. They’re created by a parahuman called Doormaker. The Doctor told me he was blind and deaf to his surroundings, but I think it’s far more likely that it’s to do with another parahuman she partnered him with. Someone who grants sensory awareness. I think the Doctor gave Doormaker too much exposure to this parahuman and destroyed or atrophied his other senses. One of those nagging doubts I never acted on.” - Venom 29.3</ref>

In combination with Clairvoyant, Doormaker normally used his power to transport members of Cauldron wherever they needed to go and was effectively the gatekeeper to their facilities. His power allowed Cauldron to pick up test subjects, that would become Case 53s, from everywhere, but Earth Bet, and dispense them in desired locations after the transformation.

Doormaker cannot move or drift his portals as they are anchored to the rotation of the planet.<ref name="30.3 e1">An exercise of Doormaker’s power let me experiment with the portals. They couldn’t move or drift, excepting the way they were anchored to the rotation of the planet as a whole. Instead, I opened and closed new portals, timing it so the opening of one was a fraction of a second before the prior one closed. I surrounded myself with them, a shifting, shuttering array of portals. - Speck 30.3</ref> His power appears to be confined to the limits of Earth's atmosphere.<ref name="30.4 e2">My ranged capes aimed for portals once again. This time, I put the exit portals against Earth’s atmosphere, aiming for the general direction of a satellite.

It took thirty seconds of sustained fire before Shén Yù’s power stopped telling me it was a weak point. Other thinker powers in my range were giving me similar feedback. A cape with perfect eyesight was telling me it could even see the explosion. - Speck 30.4</ref> If Doormaker dies or the well of energy he drew from ran dry, then his portals would start winking out of existence.<ref name="29.3 e2">“If it helps,” Legend said, “I don’t think Doormaker is dead. There have been two interruptions in his power, to date. One followed an earthquake. He was unhurt, but his partner… well, it was a clue that a partner existed. His doors all went down simultaneously the moment the earthquake hit the facility. I don’t think his power is the type that would outlast him after death, if it was so easily interrupted while he was alive.” - Venom 29.3</ref><ref name="30.1 e1">Tattletale shook her head. “If Doormaker dies, she’s stranded here, all alone, more than a little borked in the head and in the heart. Possibly for the rest of her life.” - Speck 30.1</ref><ref name="30.5 e2">It was when I was opening my door that the portals started winking out.

It was like watching a blackout take hold over a city. Lights going out, sections of apartments at the same time, then buildings. Not all even, not quite logical in flow, but close.

And with every other light that went out, I lost a member of my swarm.

The portals shut en masse, ten by ten, a hundred by a hundred, the furthest one first. The ones next to me would disappear in seconds.

I looked at Doormaker, who was staring into empty space.

The realization dawned on me.

I’d spent it all. Too much, pushing it too far. The well Doormaker drew from in using his power had just run dry. - Speck 30.5</ref>

Large amounts of energy can disrupt Doormaker's portals, including Ash Beast's power.<ref name="30.5 e1">When working with power on this scale, chaos had a way of trumping order. Too much energy disrupted the portals. - Speck 30.5</ref> His portals collapsed when the edge made contact with lava.<ref name="30.4 e1">I began opening a portal beneath a flow of lava, a trickle on Earth Bet, at the mouth of a cave system. The lava met the edge of the portal, and it winked out of existence. A splash of it passed through the portal, touching Dragon where her ‘neck’ met her body. - Speck 30.4</ref>

Doormaker was considered to be a Noctis type cape; he does not need to sleep and can function without any significant detriment.<ref name="29.1 e1">Tattletale went still, “Doormaker doesn’t sleep.” - Venom 29.1</ref>

History

Background

Doormaker was one of Cauldron's first successful vial imbibers.<ref name="I28 e1">Doormaker was beside her. His voice was one of the voices she’d heard. Number twenty-three. One of her first true successes. - Excerpt from Interlude 28</ref><ref name="I21">Zero-twenty-three, with a placard beneath. ‘Doormaker’. - Excerpt from Interlude 21.x</ref>

Gold Morning

Khepri used Doormaker to make her apotheosis possible and to bring the fight to Scion.

Once his power stopped working, the well of energy that his shard drew on having run dry, Khepri released him. Teacher gave him a power that allowed him to communicate, so he could explain what he had seen while tied into the Clairvoyant alongside Khepri. Glaistig Uaine killed Doormaker and began using his power for herself.<ref name="30.6">Speck 30.6</ref>
