Understand your issues but look to how the counterpart is refereed to within worm. Further in the predicted war-torn world if Eden had survived would have featured her as female. I would only give the thinker female descriptive text when talking about her adapted or mal-adapted form. Abaddon  can remain gender-less as it did not adapt to the Terran Biosphere at any time. Again the creatures were not strictly humans, they were a lot more but also much less then human.
