'''Compact''' lived an ordinary life, until she was kidnapped, dosed with drugs, had a mask without eyeholes and a feeding tube affixed to her head, and placed in a box in a box so small she had to crouch.  When she went to the bathroom, they hosed her down through openings in the box.  After months of this treatment, they provided mental stimulation with droning tapes, and quizzed her.  Triggering was inevitable, the brainwashing unavoidable.  She emerged from the box, got her first assignment, to kill her family, and did as she was asked.  She was christened the latest member of Dark Society, a terrorist group of unknown motivations, even to her, that was actively provoking triggers.
Her power let her shrink spaces, turning rooms into spaces no more than three feet across, potentially crushing those within.  She went after people she was told to go after, attacked civilians, and targeted heroes, all to arcane ends.  When requested, she reported for further brainwashing, and captured people to deliver to Dark Society on request.  She watched in a daze, when the leader of Dark Society was brought in by a combination effort of The Suits and The Protectorate.  The lieutenants were next, and the group scattered.  Now the group has split into factions, there’s no brainwashing, and Compact has some leeway in how to go about things.  Technically, this is where her story starts.
She can’t get away, but she’s starting to think about it, and she’s actively trying to destroy the group that controls her, setting factions against one another.  Her ‘head start’ is the brainwashing, [free ranks in Willpower], the ability to call in other powered agents of Dark Society.  She also has the ability to send them any unpowered people she captures to get a cape teammate back after a duration.  If she expends favor she’s earned from completing jobs, she can send someone to them and get another person back immediately, no waiting, or spend more to name an inconvenient, unpowered person for Dark Society to target and remove without her lifting a finger.  But mostly she’s playing the politics game, building strength and staying indispensable while setting up the group to destroy itself.

They practiced deliberately mutilating themselves to force changes in power expression, a la Valefor.

They also attempted to force trigger events, kidnapping people, brainwashing and torturing them, until they broke. They were always seeking further information on trigger events and how they worked.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

The Dark Society was a villain with territory down the East Coast.<ref name="8.11">“I’m surprised you came in costumes,” John told us. “I imagined suits and masks.”

Not an angle of attack or criticism I’d anticipated. It made sense, in a way. Delegitimize, disarm, call reasonable and natural things into question.

“That would have bad implications,” I said. “The aesthetic you’re talking about is a popular villain thing. Ambassadors in Boston, Dark Society down the East coast, there was a group of weapons dealers called the Brokers… And of course the Elite who were the biggest American villain gang. The exception on the hero side would be the Suits, and even they had costumes for serious events where they needed the extra pockets, armor, and everything else.” - Excerpt from Beacon 8.11</ref> They eventually moved into Boston and participated in the Boston Games, having been invited into town by the Clockwork Dogs.<ref>“We’ve traded territory. Much as the Four moved to Hyde Park, we will take Charlestown. Our numbers have swelled, and in the interest of building connections and ensuring that we can take Charlestown without any incident, we’ll be loaning out our capes to other factions.”

“What the fuck is that about?” Burning Sensation asked. “Who?”

“The Mystic’s Mass, Morning Glory, the Unmasked, who do wear masks, and perhaps most notably, Dark Society,” Detente said. - Excerpt from Eclipse x.7</ref>

At some point, the leader was arrested in a joint operation by the Suits and the Protectorate. This caused the group to split into factions.
