Panacea

Seventeen year old Amy Dallon is a student at Arcadia High and a support member of New Wave. With her ability to heal with a touch, Panacea does not go out on patrol, but instead tends to remain at her family's home and headquarters to heal members of the team after patrols. Her real duties and arguably where her real heroism comes in are in her frequent visits to local hospitals, where she attends to the most critical and terminal patients.

Panacea does have a costume for formal events and interactions with other capes, which is described as a heavy, concealing robe with a hood and a scarf to cover the lower half of her face. As is the trend with members of New Wave, her costume is predominantly white, with a stylized design in one color - in her case, a red medic's cross.

In Interlude 3 Panacea confesses to Gallant that her powers are a heavy burden to her, and that she feels helpless to heal everyone who needs her assistance. This burden and the expectations on her have caused her constant stress and anxiety, to the point that she has considered abandoning a patient on the metaphorical operating table or intentionally making a 'mistake' to lower the expectations of others. These stresses are not the only ones that plague her. Her interactions with Tattletale and Skitter have revealed that she harbors secrets that are grave enough to destroy her reputation or her relationship with her family; Towards the end of Interlude 3, Gallant brings up the love triangle between himself, Glory Girl and Panacea, which Glory Girl is unaware of.

Interlude 11h finds Panacea finding the letter from Dragon warning Brandish of the danger to Panacea. A confrontation with Bonesaw forces her to overcome the block that prevents her from modifying people's brains to heal Flashbang. She runs away from the Dallon home because she broke her primary rule, but is eventually caught by Glory Girl. A brief confrontation leads to Glory Girl hugging her and, overwhelmed by the events of that day, she used her power to modify Glory Girl's brain. Panacea reveals that she was in love with Glory Girl, not Gallant, and that she had made Glory Girl reciprocate. Disgusted, Glory Girl flies away without giving Panacea a chance to fix it.

Powers

Panacea's abilities are known to the public as healing, but truly being able to heal any illness or physiological problems is a complex and involved endeavor, and requires abilities more versatile and powerful than the simple term 'healing' might suggest at first. In effect, she has the ability to completely reshape or redefine the biology of any living individual she touches. She has demonstrated the ability to render a person's body parts numb and has threatened to give Skitter time delayed obesity or to make everything Skitter eats taste like bile for the remainder of her life.

She has a firm rule against using her powers to affect or alter people's brains, stating her reason as being a fear of getting something wrong.

Skitter wonders aloud why Panacea didn't touch her scalp during the bank robbery to use her power, and when Panacea refuses to answer, guesses that Panacea has trouble using her power when dead tissues (such as fingernails or hair) are in the way.

Background/History

Amy is the adopted child of Brandish and Flashbang, a toddler when she was taken from her villain father at the time of his arrest. She made a family member of New Wave in part to keep her safe from the media and those who would exploit her due to her high chance of manifesting powers. She does not know or remember who her father was, and does not wish to, out of fear that she would forever after compare herself to him.

A recording of a conversation watched by Dragon in Interlude 10.5 (Bonus) reveals that Marquis, an inmate in the Birdcage, is Amy's father.

Trivia

  • A panacea is defined as 'A solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases.'
  • Author's note: Amy and Victoria were considered early on as protagonists for a story set in this universe, called 'Guts and Glory'. The story would have alternated between each perspective on a chapter by chapter basis and covered many of the same events that have already occurred.
