Abilities and Powers

Vikare's powers are unknown. He was likely not a Brute, given the manner of his death.

He tended to hold his abilities back to avoid scaring people.<ref name="II.1.1e1"/>

History

Andrew and his sister, Grace, were on board the cruise ship that first discovered Scion. Grace had cancer, and was planning to commit suicide when the trip was over;<ref name="1.x">Excerpt from Interlude 1.x</ref> Andrew also had cancer, although it was unclear if anyone knew.<ref name="I26">Excerpt from Interlude 26</ref> Scion reached out, and Andrew was among the passengers who reached out to touch his hand,<ref name="I26"/> restrained from falling by his sister.<ref name="1.x"/> Scion, who had noticed that he bore an Eden shard, subtly cured his cancer and then flew away.<ref name="I26"/> Afterward, Grace visited a doctor and discovered that she had been cured as well.<ref name="1.x"/>

At some point, he developed powers and adopted the superhero identity of Vikare. He was said by the public to be the second person to develop powers after Scion, although many doubted his abilities were real.<ref name="II.1.1e1">It put me in mind of a scene from the history books and the grainy old news footage of an event from the mid-80s. Back in the day, when the superheroes could be counted on the fingers of both hands, there had been a riot over a sports match. The anger and chaos had outweighed the respect the rioters had for the hero that had stepped in. Someone had struck out with a blunt object and hit the hero. He’d died before he reached the hospital. We’d called him the second cape after Scion, but he might well have been the first, after all.

The lack of respect in particular was in play. For Vikare, it had been because so many people hadn’t truly believed the powers were real, and he had apparently held back to avoid scaring people. - Daybreak 1.1</ref>

In 1989, attempting to quell a riot over a basketball game in Michigan, Vikare stepped in, only to be clubbed over the head. He died not long after of a brain embolism. Later, he would be revealed to be Andrew Hawke.<ref>“Weeks five and six, assuming we’re on schedule, we’ll pull all earlier material together and discuss the beginnings of the parahuman phenomenon.  Not for the individual, as with trigger events, but as a whole.  Where do capes come from?  There is the patient zero theory, typically working under the assumption that Scion is the source of these abilities.  This, however, raises questions about where Scion came from.  The theory is corroborated by the case of Andrew Hawke, who came into contact with Scion on the very first sighting of the hero, only to manifest powers of his own… but there are others who manifested powers without ever coming into contact with Scion or entering a location where Scion had visited.” - Excerpt from Sentinel 9.3</ref> It was widely considered the end of the Golden Age of Parahumans.<ref name="II.1.1e1"/><ref name="1.x"/>
