Rafael Diniz is a parahuman with a potent and highly specialized Thinker ability that allows him to subconsciously access and utilize data from his entire personal timeline to inform his actions and learning processes.

Profile

Classification

Ratings:

  • Thinker 8: Possesses an extremely high-level cognitive power that provides instantaneous, instinctual guidance for nearly any physical or mental task.
  • Trump 2: His power interferes with the functioning of certain other Thinker-type powers, such as pre-cognition and empathic reading.

(Note: His power generates secondary effects that could be misclassified as low-level Brute (enhanced endurance/pain tolerance), Mover (perfect coordination), and Master (self-mastery). However, the core mechanism is Thinker-based.)

Power

Chronosynclastic Instinct

Rafael's power, dubbed Chronosynclastic Instinct, is a passive and active ability to harvest, store, and utilize experiential data from across his own personal timeline—from the moment of his birth to the moment of his death.

Mechanism

His shard constantly scans and records every sensation, reflex, emotional state, and subconscious observation from his past and potential futures. This immense dataset is compressed and stored deep within his conscious and subconscious mind. In any given situation, his power runs rapid, micro-second simulations based on this archived data to determine the single most optimal course of action for him to take. This "answer" is then fed directly into his instincts and reflexes, bypassing conscious thought.

Manifestations
  • Instinctive Action: Rafael does not "think" about what to do. His body and mind simply act with flawless precision. This manifests as:
    • Enhanced Reflexes: Moves to dodge attacks he didn't consciously perceive, steps perfectly on stable footing, and exploits openings in combat before they are fully apparent.
    • Accelerated Learning: He can master complex physical and mental skills (languages, instruments, martial arts, marksmanship) in a fraction of the normal time. His body performs the skill correctly from the outset, as if guided by the muscle memory of a future expert version of himself.
    • Social Intuition: While not telepathic, his power guides him to use the perfect tone, wording, and body language to achieve a desired social outcome, drawing on a deep well of micro-expressions and social cues he has and will encounter.
Trump Effect

Rafael's power creates significant interference for other specific Thinker powers:

  • Precognition: His decisions are based on data that includes the precog's own future predictions, making his future appear as a shifting, probabilistic haze. He is not a complete "blind spot" but is highly difficult to model accurately (e.g., Contessa's power would struggle with him, producing constantly shifting paths).
  • Empathy/Telepathy: Powers that read surface thoughts or emotions (e.g., Tattletale's deduction, Gallant's empathy) would find only his surface-level consciousness. The complex, subconscious data-processing of his power is invisible to them, and his instinctive reactions would often counter their insights.

Limitations

Despite its power, Chronosynclastic Instinct has several critical weaknesses:

  • The Death Blind Spot: His power cannot access data from after his moment of death. Therefore, it is completely blind to true no-win scenarios. If all possible courses of action lead to his death, his power may provide no output, leave him frozen, or guide him toward the "least bad" fatal outcome. This is his greatest vulnerability.
  • Information Overload: In environments of extreme chaos and high variables (e.g., a burning building, large-scale battle), the computational load can induce severe migraines, nosebleeds, and sensory overload, potentially crippling him.
  • Resource Intensive: The power requires immense caloric and metabolic output to function. Rafael must consume large amounts of food to fuel his ability, especially after heavy use.
  • Personal Scale: The power is optimized for personal, immediate actions. It is less effective for large-scale, abstract problems that cannot be solved by direct personal intervention (e.g., "How do I solve world hunger?").
