They shared her memories, but, like all Echidna clones, felt a driving desire to destroy everything their original cared about.

Abilities and Powers

Chitter had the ability to control "rodents," in this case rats, which was a variant on Taylor's ability to control bugs. She covered herself in rats and sicced them on her enemies. It is unknown if she could control other species of rodents or was limited to only rats.<ref>Her minions surrounded her: two copies of Trickster; a skinny girl with long dark hair, covering herself with her arms and a carpeting of rodents, Skitter; a Grue; a Regent; two blondes who would be copies of the girl in white; four of the civilians, and one she didn’t recognize as any of the civilians she’d absorbed. The tinker. Eight of them in all. - Excerpt from Interlude 18</ref>

Several other clones of Taylor Hebert were created that shared her ability to control bugs, but were otherwise similar to Chitter. Similar to the effects of the Famine Engine, the clones' use of their abilities interfered with Taylor's ability to direct her bugs, overriding Taylor's commands and taking total control of her swarm.<ref>Instinctively, I tried to move my bugs to get a better sense of the current situation. They didn’t budge.

Instead, I felt the pull of the other two Skitters, wresting control of my bugs from me as though they were taking a toy from a baby, ordering those bugs to hurt my teammates and allies.

[...]

I exerted a greater effort, trying to reduce the impact the swarm was having on everyone present, but there was nothing. My doppelgangers had a complete and total override, and the pair definitely noticed my attempts. They turned my way. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.1</ref>

History

Post-Slaughterhouse Nine

After her initial capture of Skitter, Echidna created a clone of Skitter with the ability to control rodents.<ref>Her Skitter looked up and smiled, lopsided. Half the girl’s face was paralyzed, Noelle realized. She wondered if the real Skitter had spaces between each of her teeth like that, or the gnarled twist of a nose. - Excerpt from Interlude 18</ref>

When Echidna attacked Coil's base, two of Skitter's clones confronted Tattletale and Bitch along with an Grue clone. One of them, described by Taylor as Skitter One, was talkative and frequently monologued, while the other, described as Skitter Two, was taciturn and didn't talk much.<ref name="19.1">Scourge 19.1</ref> After a quick agreement between the two of them, Skitter One controlled flying bugs while Skitter Two controlled bugs on the ground.<ref>“You take fliers, I take ground?” one Skitter asked the other.

“Mm-hmm,” the other Skitter grunted her reply.

[...]

The dog hesitated, hearing the command from an unfamiliar person, but he did obey. Skitter Two ran towards him, surrounding herself with crawling bugs. At the last second, she took a sharp left, sending a mass of bugs flowing to the right.

Bentley managed to follow her, struck her with his front paws, and shattered her legs. Skitter One’s flying swarm flew over him, and began binding him with threads of silk. It was too little, a distraction at best. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.1</ref> Later, Skitter One revealed to Weld that Skitter had killed Director Thomas Calvert and detailed many of Skitter's other atrocities. This forced Skitter to confront Weld and Miss Militia about her actions.<ref name="19.1"/>

Both Skitter One and Skitter Two were killed by Imp.<ref name="19.1"/>

Trivia

  • Both Chitter and Scurry are only named in the chapter tags. The names are both puns off of Skitter, Chitter directly rhyming with Skitter, and Scurry being a reference to the motion of an animal. Both words can relate to rats, with Scurry describing the movement of rats and Chitter being a vocalization typically attributed to rodents.
  • Clones of Taylor made by Echidna are variously called Chitter or Scurry in the chapter tags. Interlude 18's chapter tags refer to her as Scurry while Scourge 19.1's chapter tags refer to her as Chitter.
