Personality

Dauntless does not want a lot of things from life.

He is mindful of collateral damage even after his transformation.<ref>Dauntless only advanced. He didn’t walk, his body more a pillar between sky and ground than a body. He flowed forward, scraped past the city, navigating a path that favored lakes and water, parks and open spaces. Some buildings fell, but the damage to the city proper was minimal, all considering. Reputation

Although he triggers near the end of the summer in 1996,^[*] he did not know what his power did for a good while (e.g., he was not sure if he should keep charging an item repeatedly). However, once Shawn realized how his power really works, he became such a rising star that by April 2011, he was on a trajectory to supplant Armsmaster.<ref name=":0">DevourMistress: I'm curious about one thing; according to Worm and Ward, Shawn/Dauntless triggered all the way back in 1996, yet in Worm he's relatively weak to what he should be. There's also the fact that according to WOG (well, more like someone claiming he had private PM with Wildbow) that had dauntless survived without time stop bubble in leviathan, he'd be at near Alexandria / Legend's power level when GM started.

So why is he so weak during worm? He had more than enough time between 1996 and 2011 to get powerful, yet we're expected to believe he could go from high-average cape to triumvirate in just 2 years when he couldn't get there in the last ... 15 years? Sure, he had family thing and everything, but i'd expect him to at least be far more powerful at that point.

So, can anyone explain to me why his power level is so inconsistent, other than "maybe wildbow didn't think it through" ?

Wildbow: Because he didn't know what his power did for a good while. It provides an initial kick and then tapers off, but the tapered part sticks. With the initial applications, what sticks is so minor that it's negligible and hard to notice- more of a curious side effect than "This is the point of what I do." The effect is that he thought he was essentially Gambit from X-men for a while, with his costume(s) having traces of invested power he wasn't sure if he should overdo, in case it ruined the costume.

His power and its implications were then widely known, making him a popular hometown hero in Brockton Bay.<ref name="6.7 e1" />

Relationships

Kelly

Kelly was Shawn's significant other and while they never married, they did have Addison together and cared for each other deeply. He was understanding even though she left him and Addison soon after giving birth.<ref name=12.none>- Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref>

Jennifer

Shawn met and married Jennifer after Kelly left him and Addison. Jennifer was ambitious and looked after the couples financial future, something Shawn didn't worry about.<ref name=12.none/>

While ruminating on Assault and Battery's relationship, he realized how mismatched he and Jennifer really were.<ref name=12.none/> Sometime after this, Dauntless was seen inquiring about a divorce.<ref name="I19.z"/>

The couple did not have any children.<ref name=R2/>

Addison

Addison is Shawns son, who he cares about deeply.<ref name=12.none/>

Armsmaster

Because of his meteoric rise to fame, he was resented by Armsmaster; his power allowing him to easily advance in the Protectorate where Armsmaster struggled to get where he was through diligent effort.<ref name="I15"/><ref name="6.7"/><ref>Armsmaster gives up everything, including family, friends, for the sake of the mission.
Dauntless doesn't need to build or train, he just gets the power, rank, and family. - Wildbow on Discord, archived on Spacebattles.</ref> It was widely acknowledged that Dauntless might eventually replace Armsmaster as head of the team.<ref name="I15">Interlude 15</ref> Nevertheless, he was willing to wear earbuds so only Armsmaster could communicate with him, preventing Tattletale from speaking to him.<ref name="6.7">Tangle 6.7</ref>

Abilities, Appearance & Equipment

<tabber>Dauntless= Dauntless can empower items by infusing them with a little bit of power each day, permanently enhancing them. He wields a spear, shield, and boots; all enhanced with this ability (see below). It is widely suspected that he would eventually equal or even surpass the Triumvirate,<ref name="6.7"/> but no one was certain if his power would eventually level off.<ref>But they don't know that for sure. Dauntless is constantly "charged" with energy, which builds up over time; every 20-30 hours it reaches a peak, allowing him to dump the excess charge into an object. This does not take as long to build up if his power is used often, and if he is engaged in field work.<ref name = "PM1">Dauntless is a Striker/Trump. The two aspects are irrevocably linked, thus the slash. In briefer terms, he'd simply be a Trump - he gives himself powers, in an indirect fashion. If his shard had manifested differently, he wouldn't have the need for 'totems' - objects linked to the manifestation of his power. He'd simply grant himself the power.

But the striker rating is because it's touch-based. It would be a very low rating - in a fight against a civilian, being able to grab something and empower it would maybe make a bit of a difference, but the resulting power is so weak it's questionable.

Give him a few months of regularly empowering said object, however, and you have a rather potent ability. - Private message by Wildbow, archived on SpaceBattles</ref> His power is more effective if he charges the same object regularly; he compromises by focusing on three or four and cycling between them. When he dumps the charge into an object, it is briefly supercharged for a few minutes before levelling off at a point better than before.<ref name="WOG1">Dauntless can imbue objects. He can't consciously control what the imbuement does, but the passenger will generally make it something he can work with and likes, albeit with a tendency to destructive, combat-oriented effects. It also ties into the object itself. A shield is going to have protective effects, boots lean toward mobility, etc. It works with his subconscious in this regard - he won't be surprised when he sees what powers pop up.

He feels power moving through him and it wells up over time. Once every 20 to 30 hours he'll hit his peak, and feel distinctly uncomfortable until he can dump the charge into an object, boosting its efficacy for a short time (minutes) then leveling off at a point better than the last. It's sort of an uphill battle to get workable results from the object, as the charge initially makes the objects breaker-like with an emphasis on durability, then starts producing associated powers - by the 20th charge it'll start hitting the ceiling in terms of durability and start giving him raw output in terms of results and boosting the involved powers.. Charging an object is easier (and trends him closer to the 20 hour mark than the 30 hour mark) if he doesn't wait too long between charges, so he has three or four that he maintains and cycles between. It's also easier if he's engaged in field work.

Items require the charge that flows through him in order to operate. Someone couldn't pick up his spear and use it.

The way items develop, they form a starting point. Maybe after the 20th charge, he can push his power into the spear, and it flashes, goes full breaker, and turns into a semisolid laser, flashing out in either direction. Terrain isn't damaged and struck individuals and metal objects crackle with electricity, like a weak taser hit.

After the 400th, he could extend it into a full semienergy object that he could swing through the front half of a building a quarter mile away, wide enough to fill a room, could make it flash to blind everyone that could see it/him, and augment thrusts in melee range with a sort of 'matter if matter would do more damage, energy if energy would do more damage' pseudo-sting effect (though not nearly so universal).

In terms of rate of return, you could estimate that had he survived to the Scion fight, he'd have been just under Legend in terms of raw power level. Not as durable as Alexandria, but close. Not as mobile or versatile long ranged as Legend, but pretty damn mobile and still an artillery powerhouse. - Private message by Wildbow, found on Sufficient Velocity</ref>

He selects what the imbuement does subconsciously; it is always tied to the object itself, and he is never surprised to learn what it does, but there is a bias towards direct combat applications. Objects gain general durability and physics-immunity at first, and then begin to gain other abilities after the 20th charge.<ref name="WOG1"/> It took around a month for him to develop a new power to the point where it would impact a confrontation.<ref name=R1>Except if you fought Dauntless under tinker rules, you'd fail pretty hard. He can't really be separated from his gear, standard tinker countermeasures won't work, and his ability to choose the direction in which he develops over multiple engagements isn't nearly as pronounced as tinker's would be. If you were to separate him from his gear (keeping in mind that it binds to him on a breaker-state-like-level) then he wouldn't be able to 'tinker' his way up to potency if given resources. It would be months or years before he was a relevant threat again, just like we're talking about months of time to develop a new ability that would impact another confrontation. - Comment on Reddit</ref>

His items cannot be used by someone without this "charge", preventing them from being stolen or used against him.<ref name="WOG1"/><ref name=R1/>

Had he survived until Gold Morning, he would have been almost as powerful as Legend. Not as mobile or versatile at range, but fast and an artillery powerhouse, and almost as durable as Alexandria.<ref name="WOG1"/> It is implied that he could eventually grow powerful enough to annihilate a large area, similar to a nuclear bomb.<ref name="WOG2">So, question. What eventuality is this tightly packed biome of custom-made living things placed there for? Remember the long-term agenda, too. Conflict. What if he's there because the entities wanted something out there to generate chaos in the event that a Bakuda or a US army or a Level 9001 Dauntless annihilated the area and most of the local population? - Wildbow again on Spacebattles</ref>

Arclance

A spear that looks as if it is made of white lightning. The weapon could extend as far as he needed, elongating faster than the eye could follow. It was something between a solid and an energy, combining traits of both; people struck by it experienced a taser-like electrical charge in addition to the physical force.<ref name="6.7"/>

During the Battle at the Gallery, it was too weak to noticeably affect Bitch's dogs. Taylor likened it to using a taser on an elephant. However, it was strong enough to accidentally shatter glass.<ref name="6.7"/>

It was durable enough to parry a block from Circus' sledgehammer.<ref name="6.7"/>

Kid Win based his spark pistol, which shot "hard electricity", on data Armsmaster collected on the "hard light" used by Dauntless and Purity.<ref name="9.4">Sentinel 9.4</ref>

Shield

His shield, fixed to his left forearm, was a metal disc about the size of a dinner plate, surrounded by rings of the same energy that made up the spear.<ref name="6.7"/>

It could widen into a bubble-shaped forcefield of white energy ten feet wide around him. The field was seemingly able to "eat away" at Grue's darkness in some fashion. It made a loud sizzling, crackling sound. The field created a painful arc of electricity when it brushed against Regent's hand.<ref name="6.7"/>

He was able to raise it fast enough to deflect Circus' thrown knives. It "popped" when Ballistic used his power to smash cars into it so fast they were impossible to see, but not before stopping the car and holding it aloft long enough for it to roll off the top.<ref name="6.7"/>

Boots

His empowered boots made his feet look as if they were encased in white crackling energy when worn.<ref name="7.7">“According to the news and my, um, inside source,” Lisa spoke, referring to her power, “Purity hasn’t stopped. She’s doing strafing runs across the Docks. She moves too fast for anyone but Dauntless or Velocity to catch, and she hits harder than both of them combined. She’s knocked down four more buildings while we’ve talked, I’m pretty sure. Armor

Dauntless wore gold and white armour. It was rumored that he had enhanced his armor with his power, but this wasn't visibly evident.<ref name="6.7e1"/> In reality, only "some" of his armour had recieved "a few" charges of his power, but it wasn't a major focus.<ref name="II12.0e1">Piece by piece, he strapped on his armor. Some of it had only received a few crystallizations of power. But the spear, in multiple pieces that he screwed together, the shield, which was small at the outset, and his helmet were all things he’d focused on over the years. - excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref> Immediately prior to fighting Leviathan, he charged the breastplate, which granted him a small amount of extra durability.<ref name="II12.0e2"/>

He was briefly stunned when Grue landed full force on his helmet. When Circus hit him in the chest with their sledgehammer, he was seemingly knocked unconscious.<ref name="6.7"/>

Wildbow has stated that he could eventually have become almost as durable as Alexandria, possibly reflecting the ultimate potential of the armor.<ref name="WOG1"/>

Helmet

Dauntless wore a gold Greek-style helmet, with slits for the eyes, a band of metal covering his nose, a slit running down over his mouth, and a metal "mohawk" on top.<ref name="6.7e1">Dauntless packed a few trademark pieces of gear. He had his Arclance, a spear he held in one hand that looked like it was made of white lightning. His shield, fixed to his left forearm, was a metal disc about the size of a dinner plate, surrounded by rings of the same kind of energy that made up the spear. Finishing his current set of empowered items were his boots. His feet looked like they were encased in the white crackling energy. If rumor was to be believed, he was working on empowering his armor as well, but I couldn’t see any hints of that energy on the costume. It was white and gold, and his golden helmet was in the Greek or Spartan style, with slits for the eyes, a band of metal covering his nose, and a slit running down lower half of his face. Although it wasn't among the items known to public, even in rumour, to have been empowered,<ref name="6.7e1"/> Dauntless had in fact extensively empowered his helmet as well.<ref name="II12.0e1"/> His empowered helmet granted him both sensory and protective abilities.<ref>The helmet did have some heft to it, Shawn found. He bounced it in his hands, feeling that weight. Concentrating, he tapped into that reserve of power he felt inside himself, and crystallized that power into the helmet’s capabilities. Sensory, protective, and some general shielding capabilities. - excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref> Among the sensory abilities was letting him "think faster in a pinch". <ref name="II12.0e2">He had the day’s power to allocate. A fractional bonus to one of his items. The kind of thing that likely wouldn’t make a difference, but felt important.
Weapon? To better hurt the thing?
Helmet, to better understand it, think faster in a pinch?
Boots? To move out of the way?
Breastplate, something he’d neglected. Potentially to turn something lethal into something he could survive. He was struck by the thought of dying in muck, partially paralyzed, and he thought of Kel.
He infused the breastplate, channeling the power in there, hand over heart. - excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref>These enhancements eventually allowed him to sense everything that was going on in nearby buildings, likely extending beyond that after the Gold Morning.

|-|The Kronos Titan= After being thrown into the time bubble by Leviathan, Dauntless gained about 90 days worth of power in the span of a few seconds as time rapidly passed outside the bubble. In a panic, he pushed all of this power into his helmet. Doing so caused his thoughts to dramatically slow down. As such, despite the fact that his body was trapped in stopped time, his mind was moving at the same rate as the outside world.<ref name=THelm>No, was his thought, and things around him moved in the time it took him to form that thought.

The tail end of that single word was coupled with the dawning realization he had power available. Not one day, not ten, not fifteen, not thirty or sixty or ninety-

No! was the follow-up thought. His hand couldn’t meet anything before he had another ninety or more days pass. Instead, he pushed power from head to helm.

He didn’t get to choose what happened. But what happened made sense.

His thoughts slowed, and though his body was trapped in time, moving with glacial slowness, those ninety days of accumulated power were spent in the helm, giving him control over the speed of his own thinking. - Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref>

Over the next few days, Dauntless pushed more and more power into his helmet. This expanded his awareness beyond the bubble, allowing him to see and hear everything going on in the area around him.<ref>Sunrise came. With it, he had more power to give. Again, he chose the helmet.

His perception of the world beyond the bubble clarified.

And so it went. Helmet. Helmet. Helmet. For twenty-three days.

By the twenty-third, he was capable of seeing and hearing everything that went on in the buildings nearby. Businesses. He watched people like he would watch bad television. - Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref>

After four years, the bubble was popped by March, and Dauntless immediately had a broken second trigger. This resulted in every single item of clothing that he had pushed power into, gaining this power all at once.<ref>The bubble popped. His body was freed and his body was utterly trapped. He’d infused power into every article of clothing he owned, sometimes years worth of power, and that power had come due. Every time he had passed on power to his helmet, it had shifted imperceptibly. To become something mythic, something to be proud of.

Now, however, it all came due at once. - Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref> Dauntless grew to the size of a skyscraper, tall enough for his head to be in the clouds.<ref>She hovered over a ledge, and that ledge overlooked the distant sight. A figure so tall his heads were in the clouds. The growth that extended up from the ‘head’ was fractal, geometric, crystal, but with veins instead of straight lines.

That growing extended to the legs, starting at the feet and working its way up. A skirt, a dress, a lower body that was a mountain. Limbs and body, all in the rough silhouette of a giant, a titan writ in a strike of white lightning that didn’t budge, flicker, readily change shape, nor stop. - Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref> His entire body crystallised.

This giant version of Dauntless appears to exist in every known universe.<ref>The dauntless titan stood in the ruins of Brockton Bay, mostly unmoving. He or it was there in Earth Gimel, and he was there in Earth Bet at the same time. He was in an equivalent location in Earth Cheit, in Earth N, and every earth they were aware of, as well as many they weren’t. - Excerpt from Heavens 12.none</ref> He is able to see everything in every dimension with the power of his helm.

Dauntless' attacks with his lance are now capable of moving miles away.<ref>But Dauntless was attacking, striking out with his lance from miles away, to carve out chunks of the Chevalier, sending him crashing into a building. History

Background

In 1996,<ref group="Notes">As seen in Interlude 12.none, Addison is 14 years old as of Leviathan's attack on May 15, 2011. As Shawn triggered near the end of a summer when he had to perform a C-section on Kelly, Addison must have been born in 1996.</ref><ref name=":0" /> Shawn lived with his pregnant girlfriend, Kelly, in a mobile home. She dealt with mental health issues, specifically schizophrenia, but regardless they still had a happy relationship together. One day at the end of summer, their home was caught in a mudslide and they were both trapped. Shawn triggered when he had to perform a C-section on his girlfriend, to save the life of his son, Addison.<ref name=12.none/>

At some point, Shawn joined the Brockton Bay Protectorate as Dauntless. He fought a villain named Blackball in his first costumed battle.<ref>He was as nervous talking to his son as he was on any first date or first day of the job.  As nervous as he’d been when stepping up to participate in his first costumed fight, against Blackball. - excerpt from Interlude 12.none</ref>

Dauntless initially assumed that his power was to temporarily empower disposable tools, like the white-hot cauterizing knife he charged during his trigger event, a temporary charge that faded after a while. He actually tried to avoid being forced to empower his costume, concerned that the traces of residual charge left behind might eventually ruin it and require replacing. It took many years for him to discover that large amounts of this "residual" charge could permanently enhance an item, with enough successive charges actually surpassing the temporary boost they got when first charged. This revelation transformed his career and led him to become a significant "rising star" in 2011.<ref name=":0" />

Dauntless was present when Shadow Stalker's case was looked over by a special committee. After the committee granted Shadow Stalker a probationary status amongst the Wards, he approached Alan Barnes and asked for legal aid.<ref name="I19.z">Dauntless approached her dad. She only caught two murmured words of Dauntless’ question. “-divorce attorney?” - Excerpt from Interlude 19.z</ref><ref name=R2>Sleeper, Dauntless, and Oliver have their own snippets written, sitting on a defunct Wildbow hard drive somewhere. Not as primary characters, for Dauntless or Oliver, but enough fragments of stories that they've talked in or shared parts of themselves in that I know who they are. Dauntless is admittedly confused a bit with Triumph in some drafts, just as far as background, etc- this leads to slight incongruencies and patches in my memory- I can't remember if Dauntless or Triumph are the ones who approach Alan Barnes to ask about divorce. In early drafts I tried writing a purely mundane character, Dauntless'/Triumph's daughter, who has to deal with the fact that their parent is a superhero. Now of course, Triumph gets hammered out in-story, Dauntless is left as a bit of a blank, so it's not too hard to just shuffle it off, but small mistakes happen. - WB on Reddit</ref>

Story Start

After the Battle at the Gallery, Dauntless appeared the opposite side of an alley that the Undersiders were hiding in, cutting off their escape route. He used his shield's forcefield to block Grue's darkness before advancing. Tattletale tried to tell Dauntless how Armsmaster hated him before Dauntless tapped the side of his helmet, revealing that he was wearing earbuds and could only hear Armsmaster. He advanced again and his shield touched Regent's hand, shocking him before Regent made him stumble and fall to the ground.<ref name="6.7"/>

He raised his spear to impede the Undersiders, shooting lightning at them, before Grue brought his feet down on Dauntless' head. He recovered after the Undersiders escaped the alley and then shot Brutus and Angelica. Finding that ineffective, he tried aiming his Arclance at the Undersiders themselves only for Regent to disrupt his aim. Entering the garage, he stopped behind Armsmaster.<ref name="6.7"/>

Dauntless moved to retreat after the arrival of the Travelers and Circus but was blocked by Sundancer. He enclosed himself in his forcefield bubble to deflect Circus' knives before wrapping a second forcefield around a car that Ballistic used his power on. The forcefield gave away and the car dropped a scant foot away from Dauntless. He parried Circus' sledgehammer with his Arclance and then tumbled away from her when she breathed flame, bringing up his shield to block the flames.

Ballistic launched a car at Dauntless whose shield failed as Dauntless reeled. Dauntless tried to parry Circus with his Arclance, but Circus sidestepped around him before driving their sledgehammer against his chest.<ref name="6.7"/>

Post-Leviathan

Dauntless was grabbed by Leviathan alongside Alabaster and Jotun, and the Endbringer flicked them into the center of a time distortion bubble. He was not able to escape before he was frozen in time.<ref name="8.3">Extermination 8.3</ref> He later had his name placed on a memorial to honor those that had fallen.<ref name="8.8">Extermination 8.8</ref>

Post-Echidna

The bubble was turned into an impromptu memorial.<ref>Imago 21.5</ref> With no sign of being freed.<ref>A few hundred thousand years in the future, when the bubble pops. When humanity is long gone… - Comment by Wildbow on Imago 21.5</ref> Inside of it Dauntless was able to use his ability to regain a measure of normal perception.<ref name=THelm/>

Early-Ward

Post-Time Bubble Pop

Dauntless gets released from the time bubble by March. His powers immediately go awry, empower him excessively and cannibalize Alabaster. His power well get exhausted entirely, effectively merging Dauntless with his shard. In addition to that, their avatar exists in all dimensions simultaneously, which makes it impossible to do anything, even communicate, without harming someone catastrophically. The event invites the attention of Simurgh.<ref name=12.none/>

Post-Attack on Teacher

Kronos attacked Chevalier's clone-titan, which was deployed from Earth Shin against the Machine Army on Earth Bet, sparking the second Shin crisis.<ref name="II17.4">Sundown 17.4</ref>

After delivering several lance-strikes to the Gibborim Knight, he was persuaded to stand down by the real Chevalier, prompting The Simurgh to leave Dauntless for some time.<ref name="II17.7">Sundown 17.7</ref> After that Dauntless let the minions of secondary super-weapon to pass without combat.<ref name="II17.6">Sundown 17.6</ref>

Following Contessa's failure, he contacted and attempted to guide other Titans.<ref name="II17.y">Sundown 17.y</ref> The Simurgh abandoned him again, and relocated to Titan Fortuna.

The Ice Breaks

Dauntless was preventing other titans from reaching the Fortuna. The Wardens decided to assist him.<ref>“Dauntless is fighting off any of her Titans that try to get close to her, so they can’t connect or do whatever Moose and Prancer did. Some of the Wardens are going to see what they can do to make him stronger.” - Excerpt from Radiation 18.9</ref>

Later, his network was joined by Oberon, and together they were seen struggling against the assault of Fortuna's titans.<ref name="II19.z">Infrared 19.z</ref>

As The Simurgh made her final moves, Dauntless refocused his attacks on the Endbringer.

He saved Defiant from certain death by The Simurgh, and joined Fortuna's network on Defiant's and The Warden's demand, which allowed him to successfully redirect the Endbringer into Sleeper's power-storm, defeating it.<ref name="II20.a">Last 20.a</ref>

• A version of Dauntless appeared in Eden's vision of the future; a hero named Clarent, who wielded a longsword and grew stronger over time. He was identified as Dauntless in the tags.<ref>Interlude 29</ref>
