Appearance[edit]

Adamant wears a metallic costume, featuring metal bands and panels that are loosely linked together by chains, fit over a black bodysuit.<ref name="Cast2">Adamant – A durable cape who showed up following the Echidna arc. Wears a black costume with metal plates chained together. - Cast (in depth)</ref>

Abilities and Powers[edit]

A ferrokinetic,<ref>When one has a hammer, every problem can look like a nail. A ferrokinetic with inches-thick armor, he’s the metaphorical hammer, ready to start problem solving. - Playtest Capes</ref> Adamant is a heavy hitter good at staying in the fight because he can apply his power in a Brute-like fashion.<ref name=R1/><ref>Powerwise, I knew Adamant was a bruiser, though I didn’t know the specifics. - Chrysalis 20.2</ref>

Crude Metallokinesis[edit]

He can broadly manipulate metal around himself with strong crude movements (e.g., pushing, pulling, crushing) for both offensive and defensive purposes. To create equipment for personal use, Adamant can gather metal and reshape it into large rough weapons (e.g., greatswords, mauls, axes). He can then use his metallokinesis to augment his ability to slam targets with these weapons at moderate strength.<ref name="playtest" /><ref name=R1/>

To serve as protection, he can form nearby metal into crude armor around himself. Not only does his metallokinesis allow him to wear this armor without being encumbered,<ref name="playtest" /> but he can also hinder opponents that use metal weapons or armor against him in close quarters because Adamant can potentially disturb their footing or shove aside their attacks before they land.<ref name=R1/> His armor is durable enough to go toe-to-toe with Hellhound's augmented dogs.<ref name="21.1">Adamant got into close quarters combat with the dog, slashing at it with pieces of his armor and driving the animal back.

Rachel whistled, shrill, and two dogs tackled him. He delivered one good swipe before the other blindsided him. The disadvantage of forming a full covering of armor was that it limited his peripheral vision.

She wasn’t going even two seconds without giving a command. There were five dogs in the field, or four dogs and one young wolf, and many were lacking in serious training, so she managed them with lengths of chain between their collars and Bentley’s, and by giving enough commands that they wouldn’t have time to get creative and go after one of the PRT uniforms. - Excerpt from Imago 21.1</ref>

Adamant can use his metallokinesis to distort his armor into a variety of useful shapes, such as a blade to cut through restrictive material. When confronting Skitter, he distorted his armor to create a completely form-fitting suit that allowed him to wade him through her swarm (albeit being mostly blind).<ref name="20.5 e1" /> On top of his ability to reshape metal, he can also slowly refine it to enhance its strength and durability,<ref name="20.5 e1">Adamant had distorted his metal armor to create a completely form-fitting metal suit, with only the thinnest possible slits for his eyes, before venturing outside. He’d waded through my swarm, mostly blind, and he’d only just found Sere beyond the wall at the school’s perimeter. He reshaped an armor panel into a weapon to start cutting Sere free.

Could I have caught Adamant too? Probably. But it wasn’t worth the effort, not when he could reshape metal, with enhanced strength and durability on top of that. - Excerpt from Chrysalis 20.5</ref> and also repair damaged armor.<ref name=R1/>

Drawbacks[edit]

His metallokinesis focuses on strength instead of agility/accuracy:<ref name=R1>As for Adamant vs. Cuff, it's a question of style and focuses for their power.

Adamant can manipulate metal around him, it's very brutish, strength-focused. Lots of slamming and such. He can form metal into a crude armor around himself and gather metal into rough weapons, like greatswords, mauls, axes, etc. Finally, use of metal weapons against him or wearing metal armor while going up against him in close quarters means your attacks may get shoved aside before they land and you might have your footing disturbed. Very 'brute' in approach - his ability to boost attacks & defense while armored/wielding metal make him a heavy hitter that's good at staying in the fight, especially since he can repair damaged armor using his ability to slowly shape and refine metal.

Cuff is more of an agility/aim sort of metallokinetic. - Comment on Reddit</ref> it lacks fine control,<ref name="playtest">Power: Metallokinesis, strongman’ - Can manipulate metal in broad ways, pushing, pulling, crushing, but not doing fine manipulation. Can slam people bodily with large metal objects, at moderate strength. Can apply Brawl bonuses to these slams.

Power: Metallokinetic Boost - Metal armor confers a bonus to actions and movement where it would normally penalize.

Power: Plate Mail - Can craft plate mail and crude weapons with his power. Doing so takes 1 round for a weapon, if material is at hand, and 3 rounds for a full piece of armor. Can adjust benefits of gear (ie. benefits offered by his armor) with one round’s time.

Power: Metallokinetic Resistance - Attacks using metal weapons/projectiles suffer a penalty to hit him, as he pushes them away. Gains a bonus to hit and confers a penalty versus enemies who are wearing metal gear, up to +2/-2 if they are fully garbed. At end of turn’s actions, can opt to stagger an armored/armed foe if they have metal gear, pushing them (with benefits of Grapple); foes can elect to be disarmed rather than pushed. - Playtest Capes</ref> has short range, and is slow.<ref name=R1/>

If Adamant reshapes his armor so that it fully covers him, his peripheral vision suffers accordingly.<ref name="21.1" />

His armor is still heavy for others: Adamant specifically needs a retooled PRT motorcycle that can handle his weight.<ref name="22.3 e1">“Tell the others,” Miss Militia said, “Adamant’s getting a cycle retooled to handle more weight before he leaves again. He’ll go with Triumph. Log it all in the system.” - Excerpt from Cell 22.3</ref><ref>Sulfurado: Generally speaking, how do the less mobile Protectorate and Wards members move around? custom rides, PRT chauffeurs, just legging it?

Wildbow: They have PRT motorcycles, but we don't really see them in story.

ChickenGun: Huh. I remember a reference to Miss Militia having a motorcycle, is that one of those?

Wildbow: Armsmaster uses one in his first appearance too. Yeah, Chicken.
I imagine they'd come in different weights. A heavier one for brutes and the tinkers in power armor, at least. - Conversation with Wildbow on Discord, archived on Spacebattles</ref>

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Adamant was probably a natural trigger, considering that he stayed in the Protectorate following the revelations about Cauldron.<ref>I idly wondered what had made the pair stick with their employer, in the wake of the recent events that had so many leaving the Protectorate with little to no explanation, Legend among them. - Excerpt from Chrysalis 20.2</ref>

Story Start[edit]

As a member of the New York Protectorate team under Legend, he came to Brockton Bay to fight Leviathan.<ref>Fierceling deceased, CD-5. Adamant down, CD-5 - Extermination 8.3</ref><ref name="20.2">I studied Adamant and Sere while I waited. Adamant, naturally, wore a metallic costume, featuring metal bands and panels that were loosely linked together by chains, fit over a black bodysuit. He’d been at the fight against Leviathan, if I remembered right. He was a member of Legend’s team in New York. Or he had been. Legend was gone now. - Excerpt from Chrysalis 20.2</ref>

Post-Echidna[edit]

While the city was recovering, he returned to Brockton Bay, and along with Sere, was present for the Incident at Arcadia High.<ref name="29.2">- Excerpt from Venom 29.2</ref> He went toe to toe with Hellhound and her dogs when Skitter decided to punish Tagg for his temerity in revealing her secret identity, a breach of the unwritten rules.<ref>Imago 21.1</ref>

Adamant would later transfer out of Brockton Bay.<ref name="22.3">Cell 22.3</ref>
