Taylor joins the Undersiders, for better or worse. Summary Taylor returns to school the following day, but gives up and leaves part way through the day after repeat encounters with the bullies and ineffectiveness of Mr. Gladly. After some online research, she discovers an invitation to meet with the villains from the previous night, and accepts. At the meeting, Tattletale, Grue, and Regent invite her to join their team, the Undersiders. She agrees, planning to learn more about them and turn them over to the Protectorate. Bitch interrupts her tour of the team's loft by attacking the newcomer, but Taylor surprises the others by giving as good as she gets. Grue breaks up the fight and convinces Taylor to stay despite the hostilities. He and Tattletale give the combatants first aid while explaining more about the team's operations, and Taylor calls her dad to tell him she's hanging out with friends. Glory Girl and Panacea torture and interrogate a member of E88 and get the down-low of the Cities underworld. She discovers a message left for her by Tattletale that indicates she wants to meet again. Summary After negotiating with the Undersiders' unidentified sponsor, Tattletale proposes that the team rob the Brockton Bay Central Bank. Her teammates consider the pros and cons, and eventually agree to go through with it. Still planning to stick with the group long enough to identify their sponsor, but hoping to avoid jail if something goes wrong, Taylor contacts Armsmaster. He's impressed by what she's learned so far, but becomes frustrated when she says she can't tell him what she knows (for fear of alerting Tattletale to her real intentions), and outright balks at the idea of protecting her from criminal charges. He agrees to keep their meeting a secret, but they part on less than friendly terms. Determined to succeed without his help, Taylor goes ahead with the robbery alongside the Undersiders. They face more opposition than expected, including nearly the full roster of Brockton Bay's Wards (sponsored younger heroes) plus Panacea and Glory Girl. Taylor suggests to the Undersiders that they take the initiative to attack head-on instead of taking the opportunity to flee and possibly fail. Thanks to this strategy the villains manage to escape relatively unscathed with their haul. Tattletale however has to damage a sisterhood relationship to make sure everyone gets back. At the wards HQ the Director treats the children as adults and gains the enmity of the readership. The successful villains chill check their stash and end up getting their butts handed to them. Summary The Undersiders (minus Bitch) hang out at the mall. Tattletale takes Taylor shopping. Taylor shares her origin story. Grue reveals his in return, but lies. Bitch seems to disappear after being tasked with exchanging the robbery proceeds for the team's reward. They hurry after her and find themselves in a fight with local joke villains Über and Leet, plus a surprise guest. A fight ensues. After a lot of running around they are captured. Imprisoned with the intention to be tortured they manage to escape. Taylor is concussed from a bomb. The Undersiders take her to a doctor for treatment, and Brian and Lisa take her home to her dad. They explain her injury without revealing her identity. In between Purity falls back into the same racist hole she tried to climb out of. Afterward Brutus goes on an errand with his guardian and has an amazing adventure. Shell typically means some dense protective material. Such as a carapace or any hard exterior, amusingly it can also refer to ordnance. Here the undersiders relax after the bank robbery drawing taylor out of her shell and into interacting with her teammates. Later The undersiders have to go on the defensive against Bakuda; Taylor (and the reader) finds out how dangerous cape life can really be. Skitter learns that it's best to do something yourself if one wants a successful outcome. Summary The villains and mercenary capes of Brockton Bay meet to address the problem of the ABB's sudden sustained offensive. The reader is introduced to the Merchants, the Travelers, Coil's Organization, and Faultline's Crew at the Truce meeting at Somer's Rock. The Undersiders make a good showing and are able to get around the fall out of Bitch's extracurricular activities. After Grue and Tattletale try to ram home the fact that Bitch needs to be more communicative Skitter is able to make a connection with the dog cape for the first time. In her civilian Life Taylor deals with school life for once but it is frustratingly ineffectual. Wanting to blow off steam she decides to participate in the anti-ABB action, something she was excused from following her still unhealed head injury. The participating villain teams have split into interwoven teams to attack and dismantle key ABB operations. Skitter and Bitch work alongside several capes from different criminal organizations, and attack a ABB drug house. She chats with Newter and Labyrinth who are each affected by their powers in different ways. They deal with Oni Lee and even Lung. Kaiser duels Lung but is eventually defeated. Similarly Sundancer, a member of the Travelers, is unable to halt man-dragon. Skitter is able to come up form her second encounter with Lung much easier thanks to some quick thinking and using the available resources. With Lung defeated the combined team dissolves and goes their separate ways, with the ABB drug money that is left around. Taylor and Rachel are able to have a halfway decent conversation letting Taylor form a better understanding with the girl and, after Lisa and Brian return from their mission, a greater understanding of how powers can affect people. In the interlude chapter we see the life of Gregor, an amiable Case 53 whose powers present him with daily challenges. By the end though it looks like he is going to be getting answers about his condition. Taylor makes a momentous decision about the Undersiders. Summary Out of school with her injury, Taylor spends more time hanging out at the team's loft. She visits Brian's apartment and meets his sister, Aisha. She and Brian encounter Sophia Hess. The Undersiders embarrass the heroes of Brockton Bay at a celebration of their victory over the ABB, and learn the identity of their boss, the extent of his organization, and his plans for the city. Taylor's dad discovers she's been lying to him about her school attendance, and confronts her, refusing to back down until he knows what's going on. The best thing she can think of is to admit she's an undercover superhero- but faced with the prospect of actually turning the Undersiders in to the Protectorate, she's overcome by her feelings of camaraderie. She leaves her dad without giving him an answer, and resolves to give up on the undercover operation, becoming a real member of the team. Elsewhere a grave miscarriage of justice occurs. A new character, Canary, and two old ones, Lung and Bakuda, are set to the super prison. Bakuda is sacrificed for the respect of the prisoners. Coil takes the next step in his plan to take over the city; the Undersiders deal with the aftermath. Summary Gang violence overtakes Brockton Bay once again when the secret identities of the top members of Empire Eighty Eight are revealed to law enforcement and news media by Coil's operatives. The Undersiders mobilize against the white supremacists, first because Tattletale's power makes them the prime suspects, and then to stop the violence spilling out across the city as Purity demands the return of her daughter. After resolving things with the white supremacists, the team arranges a meeting with Coil to renegotiate their place in his organization. It seems to be going well, until Coil shows off one of his prime strategic assets: a precognitive parahuman of impressive accuracy and control who also happens to be a preteen he keeps captive and addicted to drugs. The resulting moral dilemma drives a wedge between Taylor and the rest of the team. The chapter ends with the electronic buzz of endbringer sirens. In the interlude Hannah has her annual dream and deals with super politics which is like regular politics but deals with weapons of death in human form. It originally meant imitative but has collected a variety of meanings since. Primarily of or relating to a low melodious tone whether created by natural or electronic means. Buzz has been known for the sound bees make. Especially as the hive is threatened or damaged. Much has Coil does here, causing Empire Eighty-Eight to go on the warpath as their identities become a matter of public record and gossip. An Endbringer comes to Brockton Bay, all that that implies ensues. Summary Thanks to Dragon and Armsmaster’s tinker technology, Brockton Bay receives forewarning of an imminent arrival by Leviathan. Brockton Bay is then evacuated, while capes that have agreed to participate in the fight meet in a building to plan their defense. Taylor meets up with the Undersiders again and recognizes capes from all over that have come to Brockton Bay to help with the fight. Legend gives a speech, and explains the odds of an Endbringer fight with Leviathan. He and Armsmaster begin organizing the capes present into groups. He also establishes tactics for fighting Leviathan and the hard and soft targets to protect. Dragon made armbands are distributed to everyone which will help them keep track of Leviathans location and help with communication. A surprise Tsunami hits the city and the building that the capes were gathered in. The fight begins as Leviathan speeds toward parahumans and slaughters any he gets close to. Pulverizing them with his sheer mass and his after-echo. Throughout the battle he dodged most of the ranged attacks thrown at him and simply tanked the rest, including Legend's lasers which made his skin glow from the heat. Leviathan was barely damaged after a direct attack from Alexandria and didn't slow down even after one of Dragon's suits doused him in plasma and self-destructed on him. Eventually, Leviathan did get slightly damaged from the sustained attack, the worst wound being a deep gash across the neck. However every time the heroes even started to get the upper-hand he called in a tidal wave to regain the advantage, killing dozens of participants in the process. Eventually he got pinned down enough that Miss Militia was able to use some of Bakuda's leftover bombs on him. This included one that stuck him to the ground, one that crystallized part of his shoulder, and one that stopped time. Before he could be trapped for good he managed to break free and even threw some heroes into the time-field as he left. He injured Legend and Miss Militia to prevent further attacks before he attacked a group of clustered heroes and villains. Before he could finish them off Clockblocker managed to freeze him and give the heroes time to organize. Once the effect wore off, and with the PRT not wanting to risk Clockblocker again, Leviathan continued his rampage. After killing several villains, he got into a one-on-one fight with Armsmaster. Leviathan wasn't able to kill him at first because Armsmaster had a program that predicted his every movement and allowed him to cut chunks of him off with his nano-blade, including his tail. However once Leviathan changed his tactics he was able to defeat Armsmaster and escape. He continued to slaughter heroes and villains alike before disappearing for a time. A local rogue cape, Parian, created three lumbering stuffed animals that fought with Leviathan. Leviathan responded by throwing Parian’s octopus creature back at her which caused Parian to be removed from the fight. Leviathan uses his power to create a depression in the middle of downtown Brockton Bay. This depression expands into a full on sinkhole crater that spans a far distance and becomes very deep. He later emerged at a damaged shelter and started to slaughter the helpless people inside. Skitter however distracted him by stabbing him with the nano-blade and drew him back outside. During this, Taylor’s back is broken by Leviathan. Leviathan was further hampered by Bitch's dogs attacking him, but even with him being as damaged as he had ever been he still killed most of them. Finally, Scion arrived and began fighting him with the help of Eidolon, forcing a severely injured Leviathan to flee the city. Taylor was then teleported to a hospital, chained to a bed, and then labeled as a ‘Villain’ while she waited for treatment for her broken back. Taylor fears that she will be arrested while being chained to the table. Panacea arrives to heal Taylor and Panacea lords her powers over Taylor. During her healing we find out that Panacea does not heal brains. Panacea give Taylor anxiety about being arrested after her healing. Taylor uses her bugs to grab keys from a PRT officer, unlocks her chains, and begins her escape from the hospital. On her way out, she accidentally stumbles into a curtain off area where she recognizes Shadow Stalker as Sophia Hess. Taylor is caught looking at Shadow Stalker unmasked, and pulled into questioning by Legend, Miss Militia, and Armsmaster. They explain the Endbringer truce and how she has 2 options, join the Wards or go to the Birdcage. The Undersiders arrive to check on Taylor and see the confrontation. Tattletale begins broadcasting through all of the armbands and explains how Armsmaster damaged the armbands and set up the fight with Leviathan in an attempt to allow Armsmaster to land the fatal blow on an Endbringer. She explained how Armsmaster set up several villain capes directly in Leviathan’s path of destruction which killed them. Armsmaster retaliates by outing Taylor’s intentions of turning on the Undersiders and giving information to the heroes to help stop them. Taylor leaves the hospital. A memorial to those who had died fighting Leviathan was constructed and placed on Captain's Hill five days after the attack. In accordance with previous battles, it made no distinction between hero and villain, listing a cape identity then a civilian identity if permission was received from family members. A local cape, carved the names of several of her dogs into the monument later, as they would not otherwise been given any recognition. Tattletale opens conversation with Taylor and explains that she knew of Taylors betrayal since before they met. Tattletale explains how Coil’s power works and that the manipulated Taylor into joining the Undersiders as she didn’t think they were strong enough. Tattletales asks Taylor to join back up with the Undersiders. Tattletale’s interlude features flashbacks to her younger self in a store, and the fight with Leviathan. Her thinker power is described in detail in both. She plans to steal the wallet of a man in a store when she sees them holding guns. These turn out to be Coil’s men who coerce her into joining his team. She is introduced to the Undersiders. A flashback to just before the Leviathan fight shows Lisa feeling guilty for manipulating Taylor and set’s her final wishes in place with Grue. Later she starts unraveling clues about Leviathan and that his density increases toward his center. Also that Leviathan was never human. The second interlude features Coil. His powers are explained as creating and collapsing realities. He can effect and change each reality, then choose which reality he wants to exist in. He has kidnapped a local parahuman, Dinah, whom he uses alongside his powers to verify which reality to remain in. He tours his base and introduces the Traveler’s rooms. Coil has an agreement with the Travelers to help them which is why they have agreed to help Coil. He has a conversation with Noelle who is part of the Travelers. Mostly ejected from the general meeting by Hookwolf's manipulations, the Undersiders and Travelers strategize in private. After the meeting, they encounter half of the current Nine, who introduce Regent and Bitch to the testing process and announce Shatterbird's usual citywide attack. Tattletale is wounded after revealing Cherish's plan to subvert the Nine, but entices Jack to a deal- if the tests end with more than half the candidates surviving, the Nine take the first volunteer and leave town. Taylor uses her bugs to warn as many people as possible of the imminent devastation from Shatterbird's power. (Her dad is injured, but Coil's medics arrive immediately and take him to get treatment.) While she's working to provide relief to the injured in her territory, Mannequin attacks. He kills several of her people, but she promises to make him regret it, and succeeds. At the other end of town, the Nine instigate the violent dissolution of the Merchants and greets Mannequin when he slinks back in defeat. The final interlude describes the venture of a young woman who comes into contact with Cauldron, a major mystery, who empowered her and now ask for several favors of her, with their final one being the most costly. Summary The Nine's tests begin. After Burnscar turns a narrow but decisive victory against Mannequin into a mutual retreat, Taylor persuades the Travelers and Undersiders to change tactics and attack the Nine directly rather than risk weeks of attacks without rest. The plan is a success, resulting in the capture of both Shatterbird and Cherish, but the remaining members of the Nine take Grue captive in return. After the Protectorate refuses their request for help, the Travelers and Undersiders mobilize to rescue Grue (and possibly Imp). They distract most of the Nine by giving their location to the city's other villains, but Bonesaw still manages to capture the strike team, plus an enraged Parian. She's considering a selection of fates worse than death for them when Grue has a second trigger event. He kills Burnscar, heals his captive teammates, and forces Jack to cut Bonesaw's hands off at the wrists and abandon the battlefield. In the aftermath of the mutual rescue, Taylor attempts to support Brian emotionally. He explains his new power- the darkness he generates has always slightly hampered the powers of other capes inside it; now, that effect is magnified, and he can access some of the abilities the affected capes lose. Summary The Protectorate's attack on the Nine is a success, eliminating Mannequin and Crawler and putting the Siberian on the defensive for the first time. But the string of victories by the heroes prompts Bonesaw to release the penalty she prepared for the Nine's game: a bioweapon that destroys the ability to recognize other people. Unable to identify friend or foe and severely hampered by the resulting isolation and paranoia, Taylor manages to contact Panacea and get her to release a cure, but in the meantime, Jack learns of Dinah's prophecy. Intrigued by the future it promises, he and his remaining teammates leave Brockton Bay with one new recruit- after a quick stop to punish the traitor in their ranks. One donation interlude: Legend meets with the top tier of the Protectorate regarding the results of his stay in Brockton Bay, including the new information about the Siberian. Summary Settling into her position as Warlord of Brockton Bay Taylor wakes up in her house, having returned to her civilian identity. She is called back to deal with a situation in her territory, where she dispenses harsh justice. She is then called to Arcadia High to deal with a situation there. After dealing with it, she gets into a confrontation with her former best friend. After a capable administer handles it, Taylor is informed that heroes are coming to arrest her. She tries to sneak out but is eventually herded into the cafeteria with everyone else. Realizing that she had been pushed into a situation where all of her credibility would be destroyed if she tries to escape, Taylor instead reveals her identity and appeals to the students there. They help her escape and Dragon helps, mentally crippling herself in the process. Later, news crews come to find out what happened. A few days after that, Accord and his ambassadors arrive at a truce meeting with several other villainous groups. This meeting is hosted by the Undersiders and they lay down the law, showing how things have changed in Brockton Bay. Later, Accord proves that in the grand scheme of things, nothing has changed. Summary Finally entering the ranks of the Protectorate, but not yet placed on a team, the newly christened Weaver splits her time between jail and a series of deployments while she tries to find her footing as a hero. The first local she is sent to is New York where she is evaluated by a jury of her peers. Ward captains of various major teams. She participates in an action against the Adepts. and as usual our protagonist is instrumental in defeating them. She is later part of a squad sent to Las Vegas along with Rime, Vantage and others. They try to stop the kidnapping of a Prisoner but instead find them caught up in a large web of intrigue including the boogeyman. Weaver later confronts the PRT's Image Director who has been handicapping her in her missions in an effort to be "politically correct". This turns out to be part of the very compromise that got her into the wards of the first place. Weaver finally has her meeting with Jessica Yamada who is able to take her to Boston. Against all odd things actually look to be going well. Then she gets word of New Delhi. Weaver gets ferried by Dragon and Defiant who were en route. Defiant gave her a gift in part of the righting of past wrongs. She mentions her future team and makes an important decision regarding how she'll deal with the endbringers. Chapters Drone 23.1 Drone 23.2 Drone 23.3 Drone 23.4 Drone 23.5 23.x (Interlude; Number Thirty-Six) Trivia Chapters following this post have a shift in themes, the person working against the system is eclipsed by the need for survival against the various threats in Worm.<ref>Worm is in part about frustration with the system, the cogs of school, business, government, etc. Even family is not necessarily a smoothly working system. Taylor rails against these institutions and we see them in-setting as forces where the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing and vice versa, and where the forest is lost for the trees or the trees forgotten for the forest. Danny's Union work and the apparently simple solutions that could better Brockton Bay, the system of cops and robbers, and even the unwritten rules are systems that buckle and break in the face of complex individuals and objectives. Dictators and strongmen like Tagg or Alexandria can appear to have an iron control over these systems but this just leads to bigger disasters the moment they come face to face with someone that finds a chink in the armor or who has a little bit more grit and rebellion than they have on a bad day. The PRT has 'PR' in its name - it's a primary focus because capes are so very scary. Showing that the capes can cooperate, play nice, and play by rules (however stupid this is in practicality) serves greater ends because it keeps capes in the picture. Take them out of the picture, inadvertently or intentionally (keeping in mind that flawed policy and system: you could have the best idea on paper but in practice it's managed by flawed people) and it's everyone vs. capes and that doesn't end well for anyone. It is preceded by Cockroaches and followed by Speck. Summary Taylor Hebert, Tattletale, and the Simurgh travel to Earth Gimel. There, Tattletale helps Vista and others organize transport routes across Earth Bet. Weaver banters with members of the Undersiders and the Chicago Wards.  News breaks that Scion is hitting Earth Samech (A Cauldron controlled Earth), but almost immediately, Scion appears over Gimel. Scion begins decimating the defending force. The Simurgh enters the battle, further terrifying and demoralizing everyone. Through a confluence of events the capes on the battlefield see and remember their trigger events. Taylor forms a strike team from members of the Chicago wards, Undersiders, and people like Lung, and even Shadow Stalker, parahumans she is familiar with. Making their way to Cauldron's complex, held up by Nix and Spur of Vegas Dark. Walking through the wreck of the complex and cauldron plans they encounter the Irregulars and escape with the aid of The Custodian. Discovering that the base has been breached through Mantellum's help, Canary is able to make sure they don't get caught, Imp rescues Sveta. The Strike team encounters the remnant of Vegas Dark and finds that they, too, are on a mission, to rescue Pretender. The teams fight, and the Strike Team wins, being forced into the secure chamber that Cauldron's leadership fled to, just as Scion arrives, tearing apart the complex. There they find five Harbinger Clones, the Number Man, Doctor Mother, Manton and Pretender. Doctor Mother has Taylor's team subdued by the Harbingers, and prepares to imbibe a particularly powerful vial in order to hold off Scion. She also explains the purpose of the extreme deviants; their damaged shards were intended to confound Scion's senses and hold him off while Cauldron prepared other measures over the years. As the combined group make their way into the chamber, Scion enters. He shatters every vial, including the one Doctor Mother needed, and damages the complex. It also destroys the Sveta's container freeing the case 53 and her uncontrollable body. Sveta kills Doctor Mother, as the body has to kill something and crushes Taylor's arm when the hero warns her of the collapsing ceiling. Sveta flees into central chamber and inadvertently brings Taylor along, bringing them into the central chamber. Where Eden's corpse lies. Traveling across the body Taylor meets up with her team who has survived. Scion comes to the central of the garden of flesh, where Eden's partially-formed avatar rests. The golden man ends Eden's life and immolates the remains, and begins to collapse the entire complex. Enacting a final gambit Taylor's team coordinates with Sveta and the Cauldron survivors, the Case 53 throws pieces of Eden's still burning corpse at Scion to distract him. The golden man leaves, distraught and angry for the first time. As the ceiling collapses, Golem creates a barrier around the group, and Manton uses the Siberian to make it invulnerable. And pretender carries the result out. They make their way back to Gimel, seeking medical attention for her battered group. The strike team settles in debriefing with Tattletale and talking with Marquis. Taylor asks for Panacea or Bonesaw to perform some kind of alteration to her Corona pollentia, so she can return to the baatlefield. The chapter ends with Taylor undergoing apotheosis. Contessa, previously thought dead, reviews her life as she returns to the ruins of cauldron, her life's work. She meets some questionable new allies and learns about the new yet familiar threat. It is preceded by Venom and followed by Teneral. Summary Panacea modifies Taylor's brain in an attempt to give her power more of an edge in the ongoing battle against Scion. The range of Taylor's power is reduced to sixteen feet and she loses the ability to speak, but she gains the ability to completely control anybody within her range. Marquis, Tattletale, and Lung, believing that Taylor is now too dangerous to be let loose, attempt to apprehend her and keep her on an alternate Earth until the fighting is over. After a brief scuffle, Taylor manages to gain control of Canary and uses her power to sedate the others and escape. On the battlefield against Scion, Taylor attempts to use her new power to fight Scion with a small contingent of capes. She struggles to obtain a handle on some of their powers and does some minor damage against Scion, but uses a teleporter to escape before he can retaliate. She is met by Glaistig Uaine, who notices Taylor's deteriorating mental state and warns her to hold onto an anchor of her humanity. Taylor seeks out Dragon in order to find Teacher, The Yàngbǎn, the remnants of the Birdcage, and other large cape groups, and realizes she has lost the ability to read and is slowly losing her comprehension of language. Dragon understands something is wrong, but trusts Taylor enough to give her the information. Taylor returns to the camp, seizes control of Clairvoyant and Doormaker, and sets off after Teacher. She finds Teacher and confronts him after subduing his group. He offers to use his power to grant her the ability to speak, but she refuses, not wanting to subject herself to his influence. She takes control of his group, using Doormaker to build an overlapping array of portals to extend her range, and takes control of the Yàngbǎn before traveling to the Birdcage. She finds Dragon still guarding the Birdcage and destroys a large number of her suits before targeting her datacenters in an attempt to shut her down. Dragon eventually feints defeat and withdraws, allowing Taylor to break open the Birdcage and retrieve the remainder of the capes within. She uses Clairvoyant to look for capes on alternate Earths, and controls several Slaughterhouse 9000 clones, the Travelers (except Oliver), Goddess, Ash Beast, and most of the capes from the camp. She focuses her army on Scion, doing considerable damage but resulting in the deaths of Ash Beast, Othala, Trickster, Revel, Lady Photon, Alexandria's body, and others. She assigns her contingent of tinkers to build a huge interdimensional weapon to destroy Scion's real body, but the attack fails and Doormaker's power runs out, resulting in Taylor losing control of most of her capes. Realizing that Scion, not used to the emotions of his human body, can be harmed when distracted by visions of his dead partner, Taylor struggles to convince the Undersiders and Glaistig Uaine to work with her. In the meantime Scion kills Leviathan and fights the remaining Endbringers. Taylor taks control of Scrub and Labyrinth to replace Doormaker and enlists Oliver and other Changers to create huge replicas of Eden's corpse to distract Scion. Foil is able to shoot him twice with projectiles imbued with her power and Defiant activates the interdimensional tinker gun. Scion, his physical defenses destroyed by Foil and his mental defenses destroyed by the facsimilies of Eden surrounding the battlefield, is finally killed after the interdimensional tinker weapon destroys his body. Taylor loses control of the majority of her capes and returns to New York through the portal. Having lost all comprehension of human behavior, she prepares to fight her way through the hundreds of capes she thinks are fighting each other, not realizing that they are actually celebrating the victory. She eventually calms down enough to release the remaining members of her swarm and leaves through the portal provided by Glaistig Uaine. Days later, she wakes up and is met by Contessa, who can understand Taylor. Contessa gives Taylor a chance to reflect on her actions and then shoots her twice in the head.
